WARD # 17 of SJGH

SAITM and the view towards Doctors aren’t great these days. Even my opinion stay that the freedom of the medical education should be given whilst preserving the free education.
Further the strikes and protests created a huge disturbance to people’s lives and the Doctors were the focal point of criticism of the business community, aka tax payers who fund the free education.
Amidst all that I was diagnosed Dengue and after three days of monitoring at home admitted to Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital as soon the platelet count drops below 150K.
I have been monitoring the processes, caring and medication of SJGH and comparing with the recent resident experience at Central Hospital for the same illness with my son. It is amazing the Ward # 17 of SJGH handled an overflowing number of cases nearing 200.

Big bouquets of flowers to
Medical care: The doctors were so focused, knowledgeable on the subject and eloquent on all patients. They spent ample time on each patient whilst running around for emergencies everywhere. Summing up, they augmented the Hypocrites oath.

Nursing care: An exemplary setting observed in knowledge, skill, and commitment. I sincerely felt that they 100% followed Ms. Nightingale in treating all equally, like one of their own. No personal chats or mobile use observed at all, and they beat the private sector staff way ahead.

Systems and processes: The procedure has been followed to the maximum, prior visiting the hospital I was reviewing the National Guidelines for managing Dengue and it is noted that there wasn’t any different observed.

Not so good
Cleanliness – This is just one area SJGH lacks behind Central, but I cannot forget that SJGH operated at a fraction of the cost. The common washrooms definitely need an upgrade, which is in progress now.

Disappointed
Laboratory reports: Although it’s a requirement to do a FBC twice a day on a downward platelet count the availability of records were very poor. At one stage I was without a count for 36 hours and then for another 24 hours. It was evident that the medical and nursing staff pay a blind eye to the situation and they manage the patients with all other parameters monitored and recorded exceptionally well.

Conclusion – Thumbs up, with the leadership of Consultant Dr. Mrs Subasinghe, senior and junior Doctors and the Nurses at ward # 17 deserve an applause from the society for their yeomen service to the needy.I am sure they will keep up your excellent work, enthusiastically as always.
